Animals of Haiti is a
children’s book by
Martha Lee Reynolds
Martha Reynolds and her husband, Edward, travel together to Haiti to volunteer for a charitable organization that provides medical assistance to the poor, especially women and children and the disabled, in the remote city of Jeremie. on the nation’s southern peninsula.
Animals of Haiti is a full-color children’s book about the animals commonly found in Haiti. Farm animals like those pictured in the book are as close to money in the bank as most rural Haitians get. They use these animals to feed their hungry children or sell them to get cash for education or medical care. The book is in English with a Creole translation.
The text in this book is easy enough for level 1 readers and I enjoyed reading it with my 5 and 8 year old kids. My son liked sounding out the words in Creole. Even more, I enjoyed the discussion of what it takes and what it means to raise animals like these in a place like Haiti. This is a simple little book, beautifully done.”
